The name of the inmate has yet to be released, but he is the sixth person who has passed away from the coronavirus according to the Columbiana County Health district.
Elkton Correctional Institution is the Ohio prison where an inmate released a video exposing the conditions they were living in, that soon went viral. The prison has announced three inmate deaths this week. There has been 122 cases in the County of Columbiana and 11 deaths due to COVID-19, the prison accounts for 6 of those.
There is an ongoing lawsuit with inmates who joined the ACLU asking for release and claiming their Eighth Amendment constitutional rights to be free from cruel and unusual punishment are being infringed upon. Without serious intervention, inmates & staff face the risk of being infected or death.
The Ohio National Guard (ordered by Governor DeWine) will be at Elkton Correctional to help with medical assistance.
