FREE COLLEGE?!?! Yes, you heard me right… Tennessee is about to be the first state in the United States of America to offer free college for all adults!
The governor (Bill Haslam) is expected to sign the bill into law very soon. His ultimate goal is to increase the number of residents living in the state of Tennessee who possess a college degree. He would like for 55% of the adult residents to have a college education by the year of 2025. Last year less than 39% of their residents had gone to college.
Governor Haslam believes their is no smarter investment than increasing the access to high-quality education! He was the same governor who granted Cyntoia Brown clemency!!
To be eligible, you must…
- be a resident of the state of Tennessee for at least a year before applying
- complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
- enroll in enough classes to be considered a Part-Time student
- maintain a GPA of 2.0 or high
This will cost the state of Tennessee roughly $10 million once it has been fully implemented and it will be funded by the state’s lottery account. Students will save almost $4,000/year (average cost of tuition/fees for TN community colleges across the state). Then Tennessee will cover any remaining costs.
Hopefully more states will start to follow suit! Great job Governor Haslam!
