With so many jobs being outsourced overseas and all the new AI (artificial intelligence) technology, it seems harder and harder to actually talk to a physical person or representative when you have an issue with one of your bills or accounts, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is no different!
I have been trying to speak with somebody for days regarding a tax return question. If you Google the number to the IRS, you will likely get a list of different phone numbers for specific issues (but none of them connect you directly with a representative).
I was getting really frustrated because the automated system at all these numbers for the IRS just kept referring me back to the website, but there was no help there. Just a continuous runaround of calling this number, to listen to all the prompts, entering all my information over and over again and ending up at the same place.
In one last desperate attempt, I posed the question on Facebook… “Who knows a direct number to the IRS to speak to an actual person?” Luckily, I got a few replies and one of the numbers actually got me to a live rep!

This number will take you to The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), which is an independent organization within the IRS and is “your voice at the IRS.”
They can help people whose tax problems may be causing financial difficulties (for individuals as well as businesses) and their services are always free! Depending on the day you call, there may be a long wait time (you can also leave your number for a call back instead of waiting on hold), but they will help you handle your problem in real-time so it’s worth the wait. I spoke with a very friendly rep who was pleasant, took his time to assist me/ was very patient, researched my issue and made sure I knew what I needed to do next.
