Isaiah Thomas participates in practice

The Cavs point guard took part in 5-on-0 drills

There hasn’t been a lot of good news for the Cleveland Cavaliers when it comes to the health of their players this season. The team has been gutted with injuries and just can’t seem to find any continuity.

But it looks like some of that might be changing, as Sunday we got our first real glimpse of progress from Isaiah Thomas. According to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, Thomas took part in practice on Sunday and has been running full-court taking shots:

“Isaiah Thomas also participated in some 5-on-0 at practice, and is on court shooting now.”

This is obviously a very positive development, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. Thomas will need to work himself into game shape and gradually work his way up to handling contact, but this is a step in the right direction.

When Thomas does return, it should give the Cavs a meaningful boost to their guard play. Even if he is rusty and struggles with his shot, it still gives the team a competent ball handler and someone that can make others better. At the very least, it’ll allow the players to settle into their natural roles and figure out how this team is going to look come spring.
