A new study has been conducted over the course of 28 days at two separate institutions. According to the research, a new male birth control pill has passed the tests for safety and how the pill is tolerated when taken by healthy men. The study was led by Stephanie Page, professor at Univ. of Washington School of Medicine and Christina Wang, professor at UCLA in California.
The results of the study indicated the experimental male oral contraceptives decreased the sperm production and preserved sex urges. The pill is called 11-beta-MNTDC, and it is a modified testosterone with combined with a male hormone and a progesterone (female hormone). Of the 40 men tested, 10 were randomly selected to be given a placebo pill, and the other 30 men were given the 11-beta-MNTDC. Each man took their perspective pill once a day.
The men taking the 11-beta-MNTDC sperm levels dropped significantly compared to the men taking the placebo. Only mild side effects were reported from the men taking the 11-beta-MNTDC including fatigue, acne and headaches (in 4-6 of the men). Five men reported their sex drive was decreased & two men said they had erectile dysfunction (but their sex drive was not decreased). The side effects were not strong enough to make anybody stop taking the drugs.
The drug mimics testosterone all throughout the body except in the testes. The effects of the drug were reversible after the men stopped taking them. The experiment was not long enough to get the full spectrum of the desired results, so more testing will be required. But I would like to know how you guys feel about male birth control? The fact that they have progesterone in them actually raised some red flags for me. Do you think these drugs will make men act more feminine? Place your thoughts and comments below.
