Big things are happening on the west side of Akron! Starting August 21, a brand-new private school called Dreams Academy will officially open its doors — and it’s just for young boys in grades K-2.

This isn’t just another school. It’s a mission brought to life by Akron native Brandon R. Scarborough, a Buchtel High School graduate, gospel musician, mentor, and now school founder. Scarborough says the idea for Dreams Academy came from years of heartbreak — playing music at too many funerals for young Black boys whose lives were cut short. He’s turning that pain into purpose by creating a space that uplifts, educates, and empowers our sons from an early age.
A Dream Rooted in Mentorship

Dreams Academy started off as a summer mentorship program for boys he launched in 2016. That program focused on teaching self-respect, leadership, and life skills — even how to tie a tie. Now, with the launch of the school, he’s taking things to the next level.
“My goal was always to open a school,” Scarborough said. “The mentoring part just happened naturally.”
More Than Just Education
Located inside The Faith Place on 790 Easter Ave., Dreams Academy is built to go beyond textbooks. Thanks to Scarborough’s nonprofit Hope House Behavioral Health, the school will also provide mental and emotional health counseling for students and families — because success starts from the inside out.
“We want our young men to be academically and emotionally intelligent,” Scarborough said.
Meet the Principal: Monique Swain

Leading the way is Monique Swain, a dedicated Akron educator with years of experience in public, charter, and Montessori schools — most recently at the I PROMISE School. Swain says she’s tired of seeing young Black boys fall through the cracks.
“Our boys are failing and dying at a rapid rate,” she said. “Even in kindergarten, our kids are dealing with anxiety. I want to speak to their hearts, help them discover their purpose, and remind them they are wonderfully made.”
Swain’s team will include three teachers, two aides, and support staff. The curriculum will meet Ohio state standards but also include music, art, theatre, PE, and languages — giving students a well-rounded education that speaks to who they are and what they can become.
Enrollment and Access

Dreams Academy will open with 18 students but has room for up to 45. It accepts private pay and EdChoice vouchers, making it accessible to more families in the community.
In a time when too many of our young Black boys are misunderstood or written off, Dreams Academy is a beacon of hope. It’s a safe place where our sons can be challenged, nurtured, and taught to lead
