I Have A Qualifying Condition, Now How Do I Get Approved?

If you’re currently living with one of the conditions listed above, then you are eligible for treatment with medical marijuana in the State of Ohio. However, before you can walk into dispensaries and purchase medical marijuana, you’ll need an Ohio Marijuana Card.

What Is An Ohio Marijuana Card?

An Ohio Marijuana Card is simply the patient identification card that you’ll receive from the State Board of Pharmacy once you’ve been registered as a medical marijuana patient in the State of Ohio. With your card in hand, you’ll have all of the legal rights and benefits granted to patients under the State’s medical marijuana laws. The card itself will look similar to any other identification card you might have. It will have your picture on it, your address, and a unique patient identification number. More importantly, an Ohio Marijuana Card provides you with the following benefits:

  • Ohio Marijuana Dispensary Access: With your Ohio Marijuana Card in hand, you’ll be able to access all 60 dispensaries located throughout the State of Ohio and purchase medical marijuana. These state-approved marijuana dispensaries will carry many forms of medical marijuana in varying strengths and potency. You’ll be able to buy products such as tinctures, oils, vaporizers, creams, and edibles.

  • Legal Protection: Your Ohio Marijuana Card makes it easy for you to demonstrate to law enforcement that you are registered with Ohio’s Medical Marijuana Control, and thereby allowed to possess, transport, and consume medical marijuana products.

  • Access To Other States: In the near future, you might be able to use your Ohio Marijuana Card in other states that have their own medical marijuana programs. This will depend on the Board of Pharmacy’s ability to establish reciprocity agreements with other states, in which out-of-state dispensaries would accept Ohio patients, and Ohio dispensaries would accept out-of-state patients. There should be more news about whether an agreement like this is put in place in the near future. We’ll keep you posted on this!

How To Get Approved For An Ohio Marijuana Card

If you are living with a qualifying condition, or you believe you have one, then you’ll need to schedule an appointment with a certified medical marijuana doctor to obtain your Ohio Marijuana Card. At the appointment, you and the doctor will discuss your medical condition and treatment history. It is helpful for the doctor if you can bring any relevant medical records documenting your condition. By bringing your medical records to the appointment, you significantly increase the likelihood of receiving a recommendation from the doctor.

Assuming the doctor is able to confirm your qualifying condition, you’ll receive a signed recommendation following your appointment. The doctor’s signed recommendation will then be submitted to the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy, along with a $50 registration fee, so that you can be added to the patient registry and receive your Ohio Marijuana Card in the mail.
