The Ohio House of Representatives just recently passed a law which would ban abortions at 6-weeks, which is considered the “heartbeat bill”. A fetal heartbeat can be detected by an ultrasound as early as six weeks into a pregnancy (which a lot of women don’t even know they are pregnant at that time). This bill was previously vetoed by Governor John Kasich, who instead signed a 20 week ban on abortion.
Under the bill, approved Thursday by a vote of 60 to 35, performing an abortion on a fetus with a heartbeat would result in a fifth-degree felony, which is punishable in Ohio by up to one year in prison and a $2,500 fine.
After passing this bill, Republicans are now talking about laws that would ban abortion totally in the state of Ohio, and it would also make the procedure punishable by jail and even death. This Bill is called House Bill 565 and it’s main focus will be the abolition of abortion and would directly challenge Roe vs. Wade.
The measure includes no exceptions on abortions for rape or incest. Doctors may, however, make an exception during a medical emergency or if an abortion would save a woman’s life. But on the flip side, if this HB 565 passes, doctor and the woman getting the abortion can be punished.
