South African Government Says It’s OKAY to Take The Land From White Farmers

There has been a major debate going on about South Africa’s land — which still largely owned by the white minority— and it looks like it is to be redistributed to black owners.

It seems to be racially motivated, but the resolution in parliament on Feb. 27 is historic and emotional as it seeks to address the displacement of black South Africans through four centuries of colonialism and apartheid.

The motion is based on a policy decision taken by the African National Congress in December of 2017.  It “resolved that this should be pursued without destabilizing the agricultural sector; without endangering food security in our country; and without undermining economic growth and job creation,” according to an ANC statement.

Nowhere did it say that the land was to be taken from white farmers, and yet that has been the main thing mentioned.  It also distracts from a process that is essential to fixing the country’s enduring inequality.

Taking the land from the white Africans means just that!  If they do not give it up freely, they will take it by force.  Almost 12,000 people have signed a petition asking Donald Trump to allow white South African farmers to emigrate to the US after the country’s parliament passed a motion to explore amending the constitution to allow expropriation of land without compensation.

South Africa’s parliament passed a motion to expropriate land without compensation on Tuesday (27 February) by an overwhelming majority of 241 votes to 83 votes against.  The ruling African National Congress (ANC) supported the motion.

The motion was proposed by the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party, whose leader Julius Malema told the parliament: “We must ensure that we restore the dignity of our people without compensating the criminals who stole our land.” The ANC backed the motion, with amendments.

The motion will now be assessed by the Constitutional Review Committee, who are ordered to report back by 30 August. Any constitutional amendment will then have to be drafted and make it through multiple layers of the legislature.

These campaigns are based on the dangerous myth that a “white genocide,” targeting white farmers in particular has been underway since the ANC came to power in 1994.   Conservative media have also taken up the task of sounding the alarm that South Africa was headed toward the kind of violence Zimbabwe saw about a decade ago.

British newspaper the Daily Mail reported the South African parliament’s motion as a done deal that echoed Zimbabwe more than a decade earlier:  “White South African farmers will be removed from their land after a landslide vote in parliament,”.  Glenn Beck told his listeners that “it could be a full-fledged race war,” (although he didn’t quite agree with letting Afrikaner refugees into the US).

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to speed up the transfer of land from white to black farmers. During a television interview, he said to resolve the issue of racial inequality in land ownership “once and for all.”

“This original sin that was committed when our country was colonised must be resolved in a way that will take South Africa forward,” he said.

Critics have compared the move to expropriate without compensation to the problematic redistribution of land in Zimbabwe, under Robert Mugabe.

Economist Eddie Cross has estimated that Zimbabwe’s land redistribution cost $20bn, taking into account the missed export revenues and food imports as well as the lack of economic growth.

How do you feel about this?  Please take a look at the videos and let’s blog about it.  Is it right for the African’s to take the land from the white African’s?  How did they get to own that land in the 1st place?  It’s crazy because I think the way the African’s are feeling is probably the same exact way the Indians felt when their land was taken from them here in the United States.  Or maybe the way we black people feel here in America after being stolen from our homelands!  Not only did they steal us, but they erased our history and heritage.  We don’t even know which countries we really came from, what our native languages were…  we just know that we were stolen & forced to be Americanized.  I am not saying I think this is right at all… but where was/is all the help when the white people where the ones inflicting the injustice on the black people?  Do you guys think president trump will save them?
