According to ABC News, many stores are now flagging “serial returners” and banning them from the return counter. A company called “The Retail Equation”, is keeping detailed reports in efforts to stop return fraud, which is reportedly a $10 billion problem each year.
A recent USA Today report says clients include:
- Best Buy
- Home Depot
- JC Penney
- Victoria’s Secret
- Nike
- Bath and Body Works
- Sephora
A ABC News Reporter had the chance to talk to a Best Buy customer about the experience he had when made a trip to return a couple of computer items.
He says, “the first transaction got a warning. The next return was denied, and the clerk couldn’t do anything about it.” It appears he had been flagged as a serial returner, even though he had not even opened his purchases.
Sources say stores ask for your driver’s license when making a return to enter your name into a national system. Even if you have a receipt and the item is unopened, the company will collect and hold that data.
