Did you guys know people spend about 1.5 billion dollars annually on dental whitening procedures and over the counter whitening products?? Yes… 1.5 BILLION DOLLARS. Taking care of your smile should be pretty high on your list of pampering needs. We only get one set of adult teeth, once they are gone… THEY’RE GONE! Having a nice white smile really can raise your confidence level and make you feel really good about your self.
The foods we eat, beverages we drink, the lifestyle we choose to live, as well an genetics all play a major role in how white or yellow our teeth are. In addition to whitening your teeth, you also want to concentrate on finding ways & living a different type of lifestyle, so your teeth will not keep getting stained.
I have comprised a list of the top 3 ways to naturally whiten your teeth, using products your can find in your
refrigerator and cabinets at home.
1. Baking Soda & Lemon Juice Paste – I’m sure the baking soda doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but I must admit I was pretty shocked to hear lemon juice can help to whiten your teeth. Baking soda is very alkaline, while the lemon juice is acid, but the combination of the two can even it out, and also bring the acidity level in your mouth to a normal pH. >>> Mix several teaspoons of baking soda with drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice to make a paste. The paste should be on the white side as far as the color… and it will also be a thick paste. Be sure to get all the excess water/saliva off of your teeth (you can pat it dry with a paper towel). Put a nice amount of the mixture on your tooth brush and brush your teeth with it thoroughly. Only leave it sitting on your teeth for a minute at a time, because you do not want the lemon juice to eat away at your enamel.
2. Strawberries, Salt & Baking Soda Scrub– Strawberries are high in Vitamin C, which can help break-down plaque that is causing your teeth to look yellow. It also has an enzyme called malic acid, which may help to remove surface stains. The salt acts as an abrasive portion of the paste, physically scrubbing away stain-causing gunk, and the baking soda is an extra touch that you can choose to leave out if you’d prefer (but I love to add it anytime I am trying to whiten my teeth). >>> Mash the berries into a pulp, and add a pinch of sea salt and ½ teaspoon of baking soda, if you’re using it. Wipe any extra saliva off your teeth with a paper towel, and then apply a generous portion of the mixture to a toothbrush and apply. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes, then rinse. Do this nightly.
3. Coconut Oil Rinse – Now I know this sounds ridiculous… but rinsing your mouth with coconut oil (called ‘oil pulling’) is a unique, old, remedy
that people swear by to help whiten teeth. It’s not the most pleasant thing in the world, but I actually don’t mind the taste, and I think it does make a difference in the color of your teeth. It won’t make a difference by “bleaching” per say, but lauric acid in coconut oil can rid your teeth of bacteria found in plaque that can make them yellow. It is also supposed to promote gum health, and help keep your breath fresh. >>> In the morning, before you brush your teeth, scoop out a tablespoon or a little less of coconut oil. You can either soften it, or just put it in your mouth and let it melt. Push, swish, and “pull” the oil through and around your teeth with your tongue for 10-15 minutes, then spit it out, rinse with water, and brush your teeth.
**** It is important that you set a routine & stick to it! You will not see results over night or the 1st time you use any of these natural remedies… but with continued use, you will begin to see a big difference & also be a little healthier. Our over the counter tooth paste has a lot of chemicals in them (yes… please do your research).
While not “natural” per say, using 3% hydrogen peroxide as a mouth rinse can whiten your teeth through the process of oxidation. It is an active indigent in many OTC whitening kits, but is often times found in much higher (and expensive) combinations in them.
I hope this information has been useful to you… and if you know any other natural whitening remedies, please post them below.
